Coca-Cola’s bottle is arguably just as recognizable as its logo—but while it’s famously known that its recipe was concocted by a doctor, the origins of its packaging is slightly more obscure.

In this short episode from Bloomberg’s ‘Behind the Design’ series, you’ll learn about the cola’s surprising beginnings and how it earned its silhouette.

Interestingly, the beverage first came in regular, straight-cut bottles. Unfortunately, the easy-to-replicate shape attracted copycats, so the brand hosted a nationwide design contest in hopes of warding off competitors attempting to piggyback on its success.

One contender was the Root Glass Company, who associated Coca-Cola with the cocoa bean. It thus presented a design inspired by the shape of a cocoa pod, and the rest was history.
